Unborn Son*

After Al Simmons had committed suicide, he was visited by God. It was then that God reminded Al of portions of his past that had been forgotten or obscured by the lies of Hell.

According to God, Al and Wanda were once to have a son but Wanda miscarried. At some point, the soul of that unborn son was taken to Hell to be used against Simmons. Upon her death, Wanda thought of her lost son and journeyed to Hell to retrieve him.

There in Hell, Wanda and her Unborn Son took refuge in a cabin constructed for them by Heaven and awaited Al to rescue them.

Wanda decided to hide the Unborn Son and escape on her own. She was eventually captured but the child remained hidden.

However, during Spawn's battle with Satan, one of Satan's minions named Hellion went insearch of whatever Wanda had hidden and found the child. He then returned to his master with the child which was then used (along with Wanda) as bargaining chips against Spawn.

Spawn and Wanda briefly escaped with the child, and Wanda explained to Al that the unused soul could be used to allow him to be reborn again on Earth. She fused the soul with Al, and after making an agreement with God and Satan for their safety, Al returned to Earth human (or close to it) once again.

Unseen ruler of the Fifth Level
The Unseen Ruler of Hell's Fifth Level fabricated scriptures for his subjects to follow a trillion years ago. Over the eons, the damned souls who resided in the fifth level had come to religiously follow the scriptures without question and pray for the day when the foretold messiah would arrive to release them from Hell.

Of course, the messiah would never come, he too was a fabrication. The Unseen Ruler used his false religion to control and torment his subjects.

Malebolgia, ruler of his own level of Hell, disrupted this plan in order to spite the Unseen Ruler. He did this by allowing Spawn to appear briefly in the fifth level - long enough to instill doubt amongst its denizens and lay the seed of destruction for their false religion.

Urizen
Urizen is the dark god of Shadows. According to the demons Ab and Zab, Urizen is so old most have forgotten about him. The poet William Blake wrote of Urizen, but he got a lot of it wrong - and how he knew about him in the first place, no one knows.

Urizen was long ago imprisoned in the void by the combined forces of Heaven and Hell. The dark god is an enemy to both factions because he negates human souls - the prizes of both Heaven and Hell. Thus they worked together to imprison him, the best option since he cannot be destroyed.

On Earth, a group of humans called simply "The Group" tried unsuccessfully to summon Urizen. Their plan was foiled by Spawn. A short time later, the demons Ab and Zab were hired by Malebolgia to unleash Urizen upon the world. The demon had hoped that releasing Urizen would initiate the Apocalypse and the forces of Heaven would be overtaken. As his last act of Earthly manipulation, Malebolgia sent Ab and Zab to sacrifice 13 people near Malice, Pennsylvania - as planned, Urizen came.

Immediately, Spawn began battling the beast but was quickly defeated. While unconscious, Spawn was summoned by Greenworld once again. They, like Heaven, could not allow Urizen to roam free, and they gave Spawn new powers to help defeat the beast.

Meanwhile, the forces of Heaven were gathering to attack Urizen, unaware that they were falling into Malebolgia's trap. Luckily, level-headed orders from the top combined with Angela's diplomacy stopped Heaven from attacking.

Back in Pennsylvania, Spawn fought Urizen alone until Angela arrived to help. Using his new powers from Greenworld, Spawn and Angela were able to imprison Urizen within the Earth itself. As the dark god sank into the soil, his hand reached out and became like stone - a formation the townsfolk took to calling the Devil's Right Hand.

Later, after Malice had rebuilt, three brothers were playing on the Devil's Right Hand and a small shard of the rock went into one of the boys' foot. He somehow absorbed or released a portion of Urizen's power and shared it with his brothers.

Suddenly, they found they could do amazing things with their minds, but they quickly lost control of the evil inside them. Spawn returned and forced Urizen out of them and back into the Earth once again, but the boys were never the same.
