Cy-Gor | Spawn 42A human-gorilla hybrid, enhanced with cutting edge cybernetics and weaponry. Cy-Gor was created by a division of the US government called the USSG, in a program called Project Sim (cy2). The program was spearheaded by Doctor Frederick Willheim, who personally oversaw Cy-Gor’s creation. Willheim carefully selected a gorilla with a high pain tolerance, and merged the ape with a human mind – at a ratio of 20% ape, 80% human (38). However, near the end of the process, the doctor suffered a stroke (38) and Cy-Gor escaped after only achieving a ratio of 50/50 (40).

The human mind used in Cy-Gor’s creation was that of Mike Konieczny. Konieczny was an operative for the USSG, and shortly after the murder of Al Simmons, Konieczy was going to blow the whistle. Before he could, he was detained and forced to ‘volunteer’ for Project Sim (57).

After excaping fromhis captives, Cy-Gor began a long journey to New York (42), where he intended to find Al Simmons (49). He seemed to intuitively know that Spawn was in fact Al Simmons, and tracked him down in his alleyway home. Simmons and Cy-Gor, both confused by the situation began fighting, and Cy-Gor was quickly knocked unconscious (57). While unconscious, Spawn found and removed a tracking device within Cy-Gor (58), but to no avail. A short time later, agents arrived and haled the unconscious beast away – to the Norristown Containment Facility, under the watchful eye of Jason Wynn (61).

After another brief escape, Cy-Gor was transferred to No Man’s Archipelago, and received a number of upgrades to his cybernetics (cy2). Following his retooling, Cy-Gor once again broke free, and removed the components of his brain that allowed the USSG to control and track him (cy2). On his own, Cy-Gor travelled back to New York, and often used his powers to help others (cy3).

A number of years passed and Cy-Gor died of unknown causes.

Cy-Gor | Spawn 289Years later, Cy-Gor was resurrected by Al Simmons using his newfound powers to raise the dead under his control (289). Cy-Gor, along with Curse, Overtkill, and Freak, all became new allies of Spawn – under his control, and with only a portion of their original intellect and sentience. Additionally, Spawn could kill them once again at will, with only a touch (292).

As Spawn’s minion, Cy-Gor went on missions to Spawn’s bidding. Including destroying a data center in Papua New Guinea (290), and helping to defeat the Violator (295). But things changed for Cy-Gor after he was sent to secure Jim Downing (who was still in a coma at the time) (300). After awakening, Jim Downing took Cy-Gor and the others in, and attempted to ‘heal’ them using his own blood. Jim wanted to help restore their minds to their original states (311).

After discovering their absence, Al Simmons travelled to Jim Downing’s location and was furious to discover that Jim had transfused his own blood – which Spawn believed was poisoned and trackable by the forces of Hell. Nonetheless, he retrieved the creatures, much to Jim’s dismay. But just before departing with Al, Cy-Gor received one more treatment from Jim (312).

After returning with Spawn to his secret hideout, Cy-Gor was attacked by an unknown assailant, and spent some time recovering. Perhaps before he was ready, he joined Spawn on a return trip to Omega Island. There they faced Disruptor, who forced Cy-Gor to turn on Spawn until they were both captured (universe). Spawn was soon able to escape, but Cy-Gor remained, and was used as bait to lure Spawn back. In a subsequent battle with the Soul Crusher, Spawn rescued Cy-Gor, and the Cy-Gor showed his remaining humanity when he stopped Spawn from murdering Soul Crusher (320).
